A majestic view

It was thirty years ago today...
(Sounds almost like an old Beatles' lyric, doesn't it? Sergeant Pepper...)

We had been travelling, by means of a small, cozy train on a narrow-gauge railway, up to the mountain resort of Darjeeling, northern India.
A beautiful spot and we found a good place to stay. At night it was b*tching cold, but our landlord provided us with warm-water bottles for the beds so we were doing fine.
BUT...
the weather sucked! Cloudy, cloudy, cloudy. Here we were, at the edge of the Himalayas, and we couldn't see a damn thing!

The first day passed, and the second. On the third, February 11, we were scheduled to travel on. We were devastated.
THEN...
on the morning of this third day, as we awoke and left the hotel, the sun was shining. Yes, it was almost like a gift from somebody up there who liked us.
And we strolled out of the village along a narrow road, and we turned our faces to the north, and we beheld, at the horizon, a jagged line of white mountain tops. And in the center, Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world.

It was unforgettable.
